Dodge Ball - Who Knew!
I am diving into old newspapers again for research. I came across this small article and had to laugh. From The Frederick Post, Frederick, MD, April 19, 1917, page 6:
Dodge Ball Season Begun
In a game of dodge ball played in Emmitsburg, the first of a series held under the auspices of the Frederick County Athletic League between Emittsburg and Walkersville public schools, the girls from Emittsburg won by the score of 9 to 3. The lineup:
Emittsburg -- Virginia Eyster, captain; May Rowe, Saranna White, Ethel Annan, Helen Ohler, Laura Adelsberger, Anna Bishop, Margaret Linn, Cynthia Claggett, Annabell Linn.
Walkersville -- Freeda Smith, captain; Margaret Smith, Henrietta Cramer, Alice Gilbert, Eleanor Zimmerman, Mary Zimmerman, Lulu Bittinger, Mildred Cromwell, Catherine Miller, Nellie Kanode
Who knew Grandma had game!!!! And if you are related to one of these ladies, did you know they played on a dodge ball team!!!

Surnames Research - How to Add Surnames
While our host provider was able to upload our membership list, they are unable to upload our surname list. This will have to be done manually. We are slowly adding those manually.
However, you are also able to add your surnames if you would like. Once you log in, go to your “Profile”. One of the tabs listed is “Surnames”. There you will see a “+” icon in the upper right hand corner. Click and the screen that pops up “Surname Research: Add”. Add your information and then hit “Save”.
You are also able to go into your surnames and add information. For instance, in the past we just had “Frederick County” now you will also be able to add the city/town, the year your family came to the area, when they left the area, alternate spellings and any Notes/Comments you would like.
Personally, I would love to see the towns that many of your families came for (or are still in!). Especially since we all know that there is more to Frederick County than the City of Frederick ….though we do love it!!

Welcome to our new website!
Welcome to the new FRECOGS website! We are continously adding new information all the time so please check out this blog when you visit the website for updates.
Current members, please change your password when initialing logging into the website.
In the "Members" section we have the following categories:
  • Profile
  • Membership List
  • Newsletter
  • Area Deaths
Under Profile, you will be able to change your password and mailing address. You will also be able to see the current status of your dues. Also you will be able to add the surnames you are researching.
Membership List is members only. Please do not share a members information without contacting the member first. We have not (as far as I know) any issues but wanted to remind everyone to be courteous with the information.
Newsletters. We have newsletters back to xxxx. As I was adding them to the website, I wanted to stop and read them all!! Definitely on my spring to-do list.
Area Deaths. I have collected many obituaries in my cemetery journeys. I am starting to add those to this area. If anyone else would like to add obituaries to this section, please let me know ( Also under "Additional Information" there are options for "Copy Available" and "Member" if you are willing to share the obituary.
A public feature is the Surname List. This will list the surnames only NOT the members contact information. A person will be able to see the basic surname information. If the person wants to contact you, they will hit the envelope icon by the surname and an email will be sent directly to you. It is your option to reply to the email or not.
Forums will be where we will be able to ask each other questions in the "Member to Member Connections".
Cemetery Listings is "Under Construction". I have added one cemetery so far with one entry for you to see. I am adding the entries from my research trips not from any other website.
Events Page will have our upcoming meetings and any local and/or genealogical events that may be of interest to our members.
Don't forget about our Facebook page where members of the group post interesting tidbits.
Our Links page lists local historical societies, genealogical societies, genealogy websites and members blogs and websites.
This is just an overview of the website. Please let us know what you think of the new website. If you have any information you would like to add to any of the sections, please let us know. Our goal is to be an interactive website that will be of value to our members.
Big shout out to Liz Stitely for working on this project with me. Also to our Board members for approving this crazy idea!!
Now let's get researching!!!
